Firstly I am pretty much a newbie. I want to build a very simple robot that can be programmed and can run various sequences in synch with music. So basically you press a button on a remote and the music and  the robot do there thing at the same time.

Thanks,

Andy

The first step is to plan the robot part.

Having it move in time to music may not be that hard if you're not too picky. There are simple sensors that detect (e.g.) just "sound level". It should be pretty easy to synch a selected kind of motion (e.g. twist of upper torso of a humanoid) with peaks in sound level.

At a more sophisticated level, you'd perhaps try to do a Fourier on the sound and extract some major periods (e.g. loudest harmonic and 2nd-loudest)  and have different motions driven by those periods.

But the first step is to figure out the actual bot body you want to drive.

Even a simple wheelbot is worth considering; it could move back and forth a couple of inches and even turn from side-to-side.

Hi Andy, welcome to Ausrobotics!

Would you like to build something sort of like this little guy? I would hehe :)

Keepon shows what you can do with a fairly simple motor setup and some beat detection. If you are just starting out you will probably want to simplify it even more.

As Kym said, you can do analysis of the song audio fairly simply in order to work out the beat to move to you just need to specify and then plan out what you want the bot to actually look like or move like

Do you have anything in mind? A humanoid? A snake? A little bopping thing like Keepon or one of those old dancing coke cans? :)
