Drone Sparked a Scare
Newsday (08/23/08) Strickler, Andrew
New York state officials announced that a foreign-born engineer tested a drone at a Long Island airfield in January 2007. The unnamed man tested the model aircraft, built at a hangar at the Calverton airfield, at night. A security guard noticed the suspicious activity and contacted Suffolk County police. The New York City Police Department was also alerted as part of a post Sept. 11 information-sharing program. Officials said that the drone could have carried explosives or other hazardous materials, but it is not believed that it was capable of flight. The engineer, who was not charged with a crime, said that he planned to sell the drone to the U.S. military. The man, an Egyptian national, has since been deported. The FBI, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and state police all took an interest in the investigation due to the airport's proximity to New York City. "The Mumbai, London, and Madrid attacks were all planned outside the cities, and that's why Long Island is so crucial to the security of New York City," says Michael Balboni, New York state deputy secretary for public safety.
