Strokable Robot Rabbit Talks With Touch
New Scientist (05/22/08) Barras, Colin

Haptic Creature, a pet robot rabbit that responds to human touch, is being used to explore how touch strengthens emotional relationships. The study could be used to make relationships between humans and robots more emotionally rewarding. University of British Columbia computer science PhD candidate Steve Yohanan says robotics researchers often neglect haptics as a form of communication, instead focusing on sounds and vision. Haptic Creature is designed to recreate the touch-based communication many pet owners experience to add an element of emotion to human-robot interactions. The rabbit-looking robot is covered with fur and uses pressure sensors to detect when it is touched or stroked. It responds with breathing movements, inaudible purring vibrations, or by moving its ears. Yohanan says even those simple responses can elicit a variety of human emotions. United States Naval Academy applied mathematician Sommer Gentry says the importance of haptic interaction on how pe ople use technology has long been neglected. "I am not sure whether it is the technical challenges of human-robot haptic interaction, or under-appreciation of the potential for these technologies that make this a relatively immature area," Gentry says.

Oh, that's something I have been planning to do for a long time now.

I saw those Furby things quite a while back, then looked at a cat, and then a small dog, and thought to myself how to make a robot pet from this combination that people can touch and interact with. My plan is to use capacitive sensing underneath a soft fur-like outer skin and put heat sensors, cameras, tilt sensors, microphones, speaker, head/neck/limb/etc movement motors, etc. and with some clever software it would become a companion for children/house-bound people/the elderly/etc.

Now all I need is the time to devote to this project of mine.

A few years ago before people ike WowWee hit the scene and almost spoiled it all, you could make a reasonable living buying oversized stuffed animals and whacking in some servos, light sensors, microswitches (this was in the days before hand capacitance, you must understand. ;) , battery compartment and a 6800e.
I figure I was learning something as well as getting a 1000% markup.
I've recently seen a YouTube (?) vid showing some guy doing the same kinda thing with modern components to a more-or-less std teddy bear.
But maybe now touch is *trendy* garage toymaking could be something to do again.

Oh yes. I had this crazy idea after I adopted a stray cat a few months back.

What about a robot mouse/furry animal that a cat actually finds interesting? (Dogs will get along OK with a ratty old tennis ball, so there's obviously no market there :) .

Admittedly the animal in question is a little on the psycho side after bringing itself up living off rainwater, grass and birdseed, and living under people's houses for the first 3 months of  its life, but after buying all the guaranteed-to-be-good cat toys down at the local pet shop and supermarket, I've found most were good for 5 seconds of pawing and mouthing, and none have been touched since.

The most successful toy to date has been a toy mouse on a string that obviously  has a sealed-in speaker, battery and switch and squeaks when chewed, bounced or clawed. This item sees daily use.

But something that scampers along the ground, is pretty rugged (one of my slow-moving beambots was crushed to death in a few seconds), and does things cats find interesting (e.g. the toy must drag something like a long, brown shoe-string along the ground behind it :) might actually be a saleable item.
