Hey guys,

Does any one here customise their servos? I'm just wondering because I've seen a lot of robotics joints have servos that turn on both sides rather then the Remote control style servo which generally only turns on one. When building a robot like the dancing 8 legged (mambo number 5) robot in the blog section or a robotic arm, it would be structurally stronger to have the ones that spin on both sides right? So can you customise a standard servo to spin both sides like that? Sorry its all pretty new to me.

For example:

I havent customised any of mine because they are just cheap 1 sided ones and I have usually used them as main drive motors anyway (like for wheels etc).

Most of the cheaper servos will be 1-sided while the more expensive ones (like the digital one in your pic – top right) seem to have a thru-axle option.

You don't actually need a thru axle servo though for a lot of stuff depending on what you are doing. Lynxmotion make a number of servo brackets (like in the leg pic above) that add another joint point onto the servo so you can use a single sided servo and it makes it double.

Their servo-erector kit seems to be pretty cool and I have been meaning to buy some of their stuff for a while (but I keep spending all my money before I can order some :)

Check em out here if you haven't already: http://lynxmotion.com

Thanks for the info man! Those servo brackets sound good and look like they can keep things on the cheaper side. I'll deffinately look into them for future projects when I get better.
